On The X Subscription, Premium or higher needs no link. On a legacy Cursor plan with usage-based pricing, a paid plan needs no link either.

It depends on whether you've switched to The X Subscription. If you have, there's nothing to link: "Grok Bot is available as soon as you subscribe to or unify on one of these plans," and "Grok Bot is included on Premium, Super, and Ultra plans." [3] The plans page adds, "Plus and Free don't include it." [1]
If you haven't switched, your current setup continues: "Switching is optional. If you don’t switch, your current plan continues." [3] On a legacy Cursor plan, a paid plan needs no link, because "On legacy Cursor plans, Grok Bot access is included on every paid individual plan and on Cursor Teams." [1] A Cursor staff member says one exception applies: on an individual legacy plan with request-based pricing, "Grok Bot isn’t available through any route, and that includes linking a SuperGrok subscription." With SuperGrok or X Premium+, you "Link your Grok account from the Grok Bot plan screen." [1]
Step 1: If you have a paid individual plan or Cursor Teams on legacy Cursor pricing, sign in to Grok Bot with that Cursor account. No link is needed. If your individual legacy plan is on request-based pricing, Cursor staff say Grok Bot isn't available on it.
Step 2: If you have X Premium+, follow the plans page: "Link your Grok account from the Grok Bot plan screen, signing in to Grok with the account that has X Premium+."
Step 3: If you have a seat on a self-serve Grok Business plan, follow the plans page: "Sign out of Grok Bot, then sign back in with Sign in with Grok using the Grok account that holds the seat. You don't need to buy anything or link from the plan screen."
Step 4: Check your weekly usage under Usage & Billing in Grok Bot Settings. The plans page says, "On legacy Cursor plans and account links, paid Grok Bot access includes Weekly usage. That included grant resets weekly."
To tag Grok Bot on X, your Grok Bot access must sit on the same Grok account that is connected to your X account. The docs don't explain how a Cursor plan account links to a Grok account. If tagging still fails, see the separate answer "Why doesn't Grok Bot reply when I tag it on X?"
We collected these first-hand reports from X. They are not official and we couldn't verify them.
These reports suggest checking which Cursor account you're signed in to before you link, because a link can't be undone. Switching to The X Subscription is optional, and the docs say a completed unification is permanent. If you're weighing it, see Had Premium+ or SuperGrok Heavy? Which new plan is mine?
