Why doesn't Grok Bot reply when I tag it on X?

Grok Bot answers a tag only if your X and Grok accounts are connected, Grok Bot is linked to that Grok account, you own a bot, and weekly usage remains.

Short answer

If the Grok Bot account on X doesn't reply, your bot never got the request. xAI's docs give one common reason: "Grok Bot isn't linked to your Grok account, or your weekly usage is used up." Tagging also needs "Grok Bot access on that same Grok account," meaning the Grok account connected to your X account. You also need a bot of your own.

X Premium isn't on the docs' "Before you start" list. That list has four items: "A Grok account with your X account connected", "Grok Bot access on that same Grok account", "At least one Bot of your own", "An X account based in a region where tagging is available."

Steps

Step 1: On grok.com, open Settings, then Account, and choose Connect next to X Account. This links your X account to your Grok account.

Step 2: Make sure Grok Bot is signed in with that same Grok account.

Step 3: Create a bot of your own. A bot that someone shared with you can't take tagged requests.

Step 4: Check that your X account is based in a supported region. Tagging isn't available for accounts based in Australia, the UK, the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway.

To check your region, look at the country X lists for your account. A broader region or no country means tagging isn't available yet.

Step 5: In Grok Bot Settings, check your weekly usage under Usage & Billing.

Step 6: Tag the Grok Bot account again, in a post that doesn't also tag Grok's own account.

If it still fails

The Grok Bot account's reply on X tells you where setup stopped. "Sign up for Grok Bot" means no Grok account is connected to the X account you posted from. "Grok Bot isn't set up yet" means your accounts are connected, but you don't have a bot of your own yet.

The docs list other causes too. Your post, the post it replies to, or a quoted post may have a video or GIF. You may have replied in a thread without tagging the Grok Bot account yourself. Moderation can also stop a reply.

If you've ruled these out, contact xAI support with your post link and the time you posted. The "Email support" link on xAI's Tag on X docs page goes to support@x.ai.

What users are reporting (not official)

We collected these first-hand reports from X. They are not official and we couldn't verify them.

The EU report matches the docs: tagging isn't available yet for X accounts based in the EU, and a VPN doesn't change that (see Step 4).
