Short answer

On desktop you can attach up to 20 files to one message. Documents, audio and other files can be up to 250 MB each, videos up to 1 GB each, and images up to 25 MB each, with 200 MB total per message. I checked the Grok Bot changelog for version 0.71.2, and it says, "You can attach files up to 250 MB and videos up to 1 GB, and the Bot says when a video is too large to watch. Requires Grok Bot 0.70.2 or later." So if you still hit a 25 MB wall, update the app first. I didn't find any published limit for files your Bot downloads or moves on its own computer. When a file is over the limit, put it in Google Drive and point your Bot at it, or send a smaller copy.

Before you start

If you don't have Grok Bot yet, the lowest plan that includes it is Premium, at $30 a month (xAI pricing).

The limits, in one place

What you attach in chatLimit
Files per message (desktop)20
Images25 MB each, 200 MB total per message
Documents, audio and other files250 MB each
Video1 GB each

These numbers need Grok Bot 0.70.2 or later. Some of xAI's older Grok Bot pages still show the old limits of six files, 25 MB and 200 MB for video, so if you see those numbers, that's why.

Steps when a file is too big

  1. Update the app. Open the account menu, choose Support, then About, and look at the Version. If it's older than 0.70.2, open Settings, go to Updates, and choose Check for Updates, then Restart to Update. On your phone, update from the App Store or Google Play. Then try the attachment again.
  2. Check which limit you hit. A picture is capped at 25 MB, so a huge screenshot or photo can fail even though a 200 MB PDF goes through. Videos get up to 1 GB, and everything else gets 250 MB. If one message has a lot of images, split them across two messages to stay under 200 MB total.
  3. Over the limit? Put it in Google Drive and point your Bot at it. Upload the file to your own Google Drive. In Grok Bot, select Connect apps in the sidebar, search for Google Drive, add it, finish the sign-in in your browser, and confirm it shows as installed. Then send Prompt 1 below with the file name. A link works too, as long as your Bot can reach it from its computer or a connected app.
  4. Or send a smaller copy. On your own computer, export a lower-resolution copy of a long video, cut it into shorter parts, or save just the pages of a PDF you need. If the format is unusual, export it as a PDF, CSV, plain text or an image. Then attach that.
  5. When your Bot is the one moving the file, ask before it starts. I didn't find a documented size limit for files your Bot downloads, uploads or moves. So send Prompt 2 first. It makes your Bot tell you the size and the plan before it moves anything, and check the result at the end.
  6. Watch the disk. A big file your Bot pulls down lands on its cloud computer, and all your Bots share that disk. When the work is done, move the big files out. Here's how: What do I do when my Grok Bot's computer runs out of disk space?

Prompt 1: work on a big file from Google Drive

The file I need you to work on is in my Google Drive. It's called "[file name]". Find it in Drive and work on it from there instead of me attaching it. Tell me its size and type first. If you can't open it from Drive, tell me exactly what failed and don't guess at its contents.

Prompt 2: before you download or move a big file

Example: "Download the 600 MB interview recording from this link, make a 720p copy for review, and keep the original in my Google Drive."

Before you download, upload or move this file, tell me its size and where it will be saved. If anything splits it into parts or cuts it off at a size limit, stop and tell me the limit you hit instead of working around it on your own. When you're done, show me the file name and size on both ends so I can confirm they match, and tell me how much disk space is left on your computer.
