Moving from an old plan cancels it with a prorated refund, and your new plan starts right away. Tier changes on The X Subscription depend on where you pay.

If you move from an old Cursor, SuperGrok, or X Premium plan to The X Subscription, the old plans you select are cancelled and you get an automatic prorated refund for unused time. Your new plan starts right away at full price, on a new billing cycle. If you're already on The X Subscription and change tiers, timing depends on where you pay. On the web, an upgrade starts immediately. If you pay through Apple on an iPhone or iPad, a downgrade waits until your next billing cycle.
Six people on X described their own refunds after switching, on Oct 12–13 (ET). Their experiences are mixed, so we're sharing them as reports, not as how it works.
Got the refund (4):
Refund missing, refused, or smaller than expected (2):
Refund timing in these reports ranges from a few hours to a few days, which fits the docs' "depends on your bank or payment provider" [2]. If your refund hasn't shown up, we'd check your original payment method first, then contact xAI Support.
The launch post says "Changes take effect immediately and are prorated." [4] The detailed docs add the platform rules above, so we'd trust your confirmation screen. It "shows the tier, price, effective date, and any refund or credit for your account." [5]
We didn't find any first-hand user reports about downgrading on the web, or about how a tier change was prorated after switching, so those two questions are still open.
You can cancel at any time [7], and "you'll keep access to your benefits through the end of your billing period." [4] Cancelling doesn't bring back your old Cursor, SuperGrok, or X Premium plans. [7]

Cancel it in your iPhone or iPad Settings, or Apple keeps billing you. Request any refund from Apple.
