Short answer

Yes. You can upload last year's tax return to Grok Bot and ask it to look for deductions, credits and overpayments you might have missed. Black out your Social Security number before you upload it. Your Bot doesn't file anything in this setup, so treat what it finds as leads to check with a tax pro. I checked the IRS page on amended returns, and it says, "To claim a refund, you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later."

Steps

  1. Get Premium. It's the lowest plan that includes Grok Bot, at $30/month before tax (xAI pricing). If your account already has Grok Bot, skip this step.
  2. Black out your Social Security number, then upload the return. Your return can show Social Security numbers on more than one page, for you, a spouse and any dependents. Cover every one, along with your bank account and routing numbers. Then try to select the text where each number was. If you can still copy it, the number is still in the file, so crop it or redact it again. Upload the cleaned copy as a PDF or as images, using the attachment button or by dragging it into the chat box. Each document can be up to 25 MB. If the file won't open, export it again as a plain PDF or an image (Files and results).
  3. Send the copy-paste prompt below. It asks for line numbers so you and your tax pro can find each item on the return quickly. It also asks your Bot to keep what it found separate from what it's guessing.
  4. If something real turns up, amend. Take the list to a tax pro or your tax software and file Form 1040-X. You can file it electronically for the current year or the two years before that, and paper still works too (About Form 1040-X). Plan on 8 to 12 weeks for processing. After three weeks, you can check progress with the IRS's Where's My Amended Return? tool. If your federal numbers change, ask your state tax agency whether your state return needs fixing too.

Copy this prompt to your Grok Bot

Replace [tax year] with the year of your return before you send it.

The attached file is my [tax year] federal tax return, with my Social Security numbers and account numbers blacked out. Review it for deductions, credits or overpayments I may have missed. For each one, cite the form or schedule and the line number, say why you think it applies, give a rough dollar range, and tell me what document I'd need to prove it. Keep what you found on the return separate from what you're assuming, and list the questions you'd need me to answer. Don't file, submit or e-sign anything, don't contact the IRS or anyone else, and don't sign in to any tax or bank account. If you see a Social Security number or a full account number I missed, don't repeat it. Tell me which page it's on. When we're done, delete the file from your computer and confirm you did.

What to keep in mind

  1. Your Bot is a second pair of eyes, not your tax preparer. The prompt above tells it not to file anything, and you or your tax pro file the amended return.
  2. Check everything with a tax pro before you amend. A missed credit on the Bot's list is only a lead until someone who knows your whole situation confirms it.
  3. You may not need to amend for every mistake. The IRS can correct certain errors on its own, so ask your tax pro before you file.
  4. Watch the deadline. Look at the date you filed, and remember that a return filed early counts as filed on the due date. Some cases, such as net operating losses and foreign tax credits, have their own rules, so ask your tax pro about those (Topic no. 308).
  5. Clean up afterward. Your Bots share one cloud computer, so a file one Bot has can be reached by your other Bots. The prompt asks your Bot to delete the return when you're done (Approvals, security, and privacy).

Why black out the number at all? Grok Bot can act in your real accounts, so in our setup we keep anything that sensitive out of its hands. On our security tips page we type passwords and codes ourselves, and a Social Security number gets the same care. Redacting it before you upload is our own practice. I didn't find anything about Social Security numbers in the Grok Bot docs.

Reported by users, not yet in the docs

One user on X reports, "It found an over payment of $681 in 2024!" He also says it gave him steps for filing the amendment. I haven't tested this, and your results depend on your own return.
