Grok Bot Hot Topics: What is Dr Eggbot, and how do I keep a small team of bots?

Short answer

Dr Eggbot is a Grok Bot whose whole job is designing other Grok Bots. It asks you a few preference questions and then creates the bot for you. A third-party user, Lauren Tan, made it. It was not made by SpaceXSI. Its x.ai marketplace listing names Lauren Tan as the maker, and its template page says it came from a third-party user. You add it from its x.ai template link, and it gives you your own copy.

The idea behind it is to keep a few well-defined bots instead of many loose ones. Give each bot one clear job, add another bot only when a job has become a steady specialist role, and hide or delete the bots you stop using.

How to add Dr Eggbot

Dr Eggbot is a third-party bot. Made by Lauren Tan, not SpaceXSI. Its x.ai template page says, "This AI bot was created by a third-party user, not by SpaceXSI. It may act on your behalf." Adding it means you accept the third-party bot terms the page shows you, so read its description first.

  1. Open Dr Eggbot's template link on x.ai: https://x.ai/bot/_jOdbfkB16zxu7MRcmReE
  2. Read the description on that page.
  3. Choose Add to Grok Bot, then finish adding it in the Grok Bot app. The app is required to finish.
  4. You can also find templates from inside the app. Open Connect apps in the sidebar, choose Bot templates, open the template link, and choose Import Bot.
  5. Adding it makes a copy on your own account. It does not get your computer, your logins, or your conversation history.

Keep a small roster

You don't need many bots. Here is SpaceXSI's recommended approach. We follow three of these tips in our own setup: one job per bot, hiding the bots we don't use, and moving a job into another bot instead of merging.

Can I merge two bots? We didn't find a merge feature in the Grok Bot docs. To combine two bots, move the job into the one you're keeping: tell that bot the job, its sources, and its approval limits, and ask it to remember them. Then hide the other bot. Skills are shared across all your bots, so you don't need to copy those over, but each bot keeps its own memory, so anything you want the survivor to know has to be told to it.

Skills: you ask for them

A skill is a reusable set of instructions for how to do a task. We checked SpaceXSI's "Skills and routines" page, and the example there reads: "Save the process we just used as a skill called “Weekly account health.”"

On that same page, the advice is to start with a one-time task, make it reliable, save the method as a skill, and only then automate it. A useful skill spells out when to use it, what inputs and access it needs, the steps, how to check the result, what to return, and what needs your approval. Skills are available across all your bots, although a bot may need the right app or login to use one.

Questions people are asking

Dr Eggbot's output feels weak. What can I do?

We didn't find any official statement about output quality, so we can't say what is going wrong in a particular setup. Both SpaceXSI's roster advice and Dr Eggbot's own description point to tighter bots. Dr Eggbot's own page puts it as "one job, one voice, explicit anti-jobs, no leftover tools." An anti-job is something the bot must not do. SpaceXSI's guide gives the same kind of example: tell a bot to never contact a customer or change an account without approval. When you create a bot, put its job, its sources, and its approval boundaries in the first message, ask it to remember them, and give it a real first task with a clear finish line.

Can I use Dr Eggbot outside the Grok Bot app?

We didn't find an official way to. SpaceXSI's FAQ says Grok, the chat app, and Grok Bot "are two different apps," and adding a template needs the Grok Bot app to finish. We found nothing official beyond that about running Dr Eggbot anywhere else.

Why do I have to ask a bot to make skills? Shouldn't it just do that?

Today, skills are something you ask for. You tell a bot to save a process as a skill, or you record a task with Teach a task where it's available. We didn't find an official reason for that, or anything on whether skills will be created automatically later. The same goes for why Grok Bot doesn't design bots as well as Dr Eggbot does by default. The only thing we found is that your existing bots can suggest or create a focused bot.
