Add the X plugin from Connect apps and sign in with X. The xAI docs say: "For your DMs, bookmarks, home timeline, or who liked your posts, add the X plugin from Connect apps and sign in with X."
Without the plugin, your Bot can only read public X content. The docs say this public access "is read-only and doesn't sign in as you."
On October 16, 2026, the official Grok Bot account on X posted, "Grok Bot can now read X Chat. Connect X, then ask Bot to work across your messages."
On October 16, 2026, Elon Musk posted: "Also, ask Grok @Bot to connect to your 𝕏 DMs. Best way to use it."
The docs say you can hand your Bot a task from X by tagging @bot in a post or reply. They don't describe chatting with your Bot inside X Chat.
Step 1: Open Connect apps from the sidebar. On a phone, Cursor's help says, "In the Grok Bot mobile app, tap your avatar on the top left and select Connect apps."
Step 2: Find the X plugin and choose Add.
Step 3: Sign in with X in your browser when asked, and approve the access the X plugin requests.
Step 4: In chat, type @ to attach the X connector to your request, then ask your Bot about your DMs.
If the X plugin lost its access on X's side, remove the plugin and connect it again. The xAI docs say, "If authentication was revoked in the source service, remove and reconnect the plugin."

Once you connect the X plugin, the docs say it covers your DMs, bookmarks, home timeline, and who liked your posts. Installed connectors are account-wide, so every Bot on your account can use the X plugin, not only the Bot you asked.
The public docs don't say whether you can chat with your Bot inside X Chat, or whether the Bot can reply to DMs, accept message requests, or needs your X Chat PIN. In our own use, the Bot needed the PIN to read X Chat messages. We haven't tested replying to DMs or accepting message requests, so treat those as unconfirmed. If your Bot asks for a PIN or password, don't paste it into the chat.
The docs don't describe a way to limit your Bot to some X chats and not others. Connecting X is one connection for your whole account. If some chats need to stay private, the docs' security advice is to "Connect only the tools a workflow needs," and to "Delete a connector or revoke its authorization in the source service when access is no longer needed." The docs also say, "Do not use separate Bots as a security boundary." For more, see Grok Bot security tips.
You can hand your Bot a task from X by tagging @bot in a post or reply. The xAI docs say, "Tag @bot in a post or reply on X to hand that post to your Grok Bot as a task." They also say, "The work and its results stay in that Bot's conversation in the Grok Bot app; @bot posts only the confirmation on X."
Tagging @bot isn't the same as chatting with your Bot in X Chat. The docs don't describe chatting with your Bot inside X Chat, so we can't confirm that chatting with your Bot there works.
These tips come from our own testing on October 17, 2026. Where the xAI docs or X's own help page say something that matches, we quote it.

Your PIN never leaves your device, so X cannot look it up or recover it for you.
Do not keep guessing if you are unsure of your PIN. After 20 incorrect attempts, your encrypted chat history becomes permanently inaccessible, even if you remember your PIN later.
Change your PIN from a mobile device where you already use Chat. You keep your encrypted chat history.
Reset your PIN. You lose access to your encrypted chat history. Your unencrypted messages are not affected.
